SjöKong Ball in Hong Kong! 2(2)

Where sailors come and go there will be a mark after them. In Hong Kong the Navy has been present with one of the most dedicated reserve officers you can think of.
The Royal Swedish Navies reserve officers, have for many centuries been the cultural carrier of moral, values and dedication to their country. After serving their country for many years they maintain the traditions and their dedication. Starting up when they are still young. During their student life they organize their social life joyning and engaging in the reserve officers student corps and even after they go further into their civil live and careers they keep in touch, attend the corps´ ball every year and market the Navy all around the world.

A new corps was establish in October 2011 in Hong Kong, by reserve officer LTC Michael Zell and his wife Mita, called SjöKong. Several Navy Reserve Officers and their wives flow into Hong Kong to celebrate the event!
Anders and I were asked to be their Inspector and Inspectrix, and we couldn’t be anything else then very proud to be chosen for the position. We were installed at the Gun Room in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

The most beautiful member of SjöKong!

After our installation, Anders was obliged to inspect the corps, which went very well but nevertheless the woman present topped the men by far!

The evening was filled with tales about the adventures everybody had during their time in the Royal Swedish Navy. In the meantime we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with good wines and of cause as Swedish tradition require many songs.

No shopping in Hong Kong = possible! 1(2)

For the first time in eight months I left the peninsula (well more the island for we can't exactly take our grabber blue car and drive to China or?) and we went for a weekend to Hong Kong!

We had fabulous weather and met fantastic people. If Emma, our friends’ 25 year old wonderful daughter wouldn't have been there, Anders and I would have been the youngest in the group of 16 people. This hasn't happened for many years. Nevertheless, they had been there a couple of days before us with a busy and social program but they surely warned us out! We had; FUN, FUN, FUN!

After we arrived on Friday afternoon we took a walk down town HK, no need to rush into shops for we would be there some more days, so we strolled around in the center and yes of cause had a beer.

In the evening we went out for dinner and as our friends live since a couple of years in HK and know the city extremely well, so we were in a wonderful street were we had dinner.

All around us there was Halloween celebration a bit soon according to the date but we weren't slow to fall into the crowd.

Who is who???

Next day we went sailing ......................
Had great temperature, were on a beautiful sailing boat, belonging to Andrew a friend of Patrick, had great company, enjoyed a wonderful lunch, drank water, wine and beer. Life can be a dream at least for Anders and me it was that entire day, for in the evening we were installed as Inspector and Inspectrix................But I'll get to that on my next blog!

SWEOR & the Nordic Club gathered for Chocolate Wine tasting.

On the second floor high up on the fashionable city area called Itaewon, in a well asorted delicate shop, over 20 women gathered for a Chocolate Wine tasting.

The two spouses’ clubs had arranged this activity together, giving us the possibility to meet new people who can help each other in many different areas but also to introduce this “market place”. Here we can find delicates from different parts of the world and also a very nice selection of different wines. Sometime it does feel good to have access to the familiar things you’re used to, living far away from your home country, can strangely make you miss certain ingredients and products.

Dan Schulte, the sommelier and CEO for Pieroth Wines*) in Korea, and the staff of the Deli, had prepared several wines and trays with pieces of chocolates for us, so we could learn about blending these tastes. If you want to try it, which I really can recommend, think about that the higher the cacao percentage in your chocolate is the dryer the wines need to be, in order to have a good combination of flavours.

*)If you live here in Seoul, you can participate to the BIGGEST WINE TASTING in the world on Sunday the 20th of November: 06:30 to 08:00 Pieroth Wines, will have and attempt to break the current World Record for the largest synchronized Wine Tasting in the World. Cover Charge W20,000 For reservations and information contact: service@pierothwines.co.kr or call: 02-711-9171

Over 20 nationalities were present to recognize the input and efforts so many people make. One of the very appriciated performances!

As always we wear a name badge, and I couldn´t deprive you from this one.....

Background of United Nations Day
UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

United Nations (UN) history.
United Nations is an international organization whose stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace. The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.
There are currently 193 member states, including every internationally recognized sovereign state in the world but the Vatican City. From its offices around the world, the UN and its specialized agencies decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout the year. The organization has six principal organs:
the General Assembly (the main deliberative assembly); the Security Council (for deciding certain resolutions for peace and security); the Economic and Social Council (for assisting in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development); the Secretariat (for providing studies, information, and facilities needed by the UN); the International Court of Justice (the primary judicial organ); and the United Nations Trusteeship Council (which is currently inactive). Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Program (WFP) and United Nations Children´s Fund (UNICEF). The UN's most visible public figure is the Secretary-General, currently Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who attained the post in 2007.

A visit to 덕수궁 (Deoksugung Palace) with our friends!

Since a couple of days back we have had our friends Håkan and Kerstin staying with us at house 7049A.

Wonderful to getting together again for even if we meet many fabulous people it surely is nice to having friends around you with whom we go a long time back. Håkan is a childhood friend of Anders but even I already know him and his wife for over 25 years!
Besides from talking, eating and having some beer and wine, they have visited the DMZ first day and yesterday it was time for Itaewon, Namdeamun and Seoul Tower  (of course by night).
Today more cultural points where gathered. First we send them off to go for a city tour and afterwards we went to visit Deoksugung Palace.
Anders and I joined them for we hadn’t seen the Palace and changing of the guards. Since we knew we would get visitors we kept some things undone, so we wouldn’t get bored by doing the same trips several times.
Deoksugung Palace is one of five royal palaces remained in Seoul and one of the smallest of Seoul palaces. The name means “Palace of virtue and longevity” and it’s situates at the corner of Seoul’s busiest downtown intersections.
As if it isn’t hard enough to remember the name Deoksugung the palace is also known as Gyeongun-gung, Deoksu Palace. The compound was inhabited by various Korean Royalties around the turn of the 20th century and the buildings are of varying construction including some natural crytomeria wood, painted wood and stucco. Some buildings were built in Western style.

All together absolutely worthwhile a visit!

Breast cancer awareness month!

Since several weeks back I’m engaged in AFSC (American Forces' Spouses’ Club) and I committed to be the editor of their magazine called the Chosun Chatter.
Every month many activities are planned and executed, highlight are the luncheons held once a month. The day starts at 9 o’clock with shopping from Korean vendors who bring their merchandize to the Dragon Hill (hotel on base). In the mean time, tickets and products are sold benefiting welfare projects.
This Month the theme was; Think Pink!

Fridays "Fun Run" for Breast cancer awareness!
No I didn't run, I walked................through the rain! Here with Fran Walters before the start.

The decoration of the tables and all women dressed in pink contributed strongly to the ambiance and that was a marvelous platform for the theme.

The speaker, Melanie, a charming, strong and positive woman told us about her tuff journey after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she puts herself behind the microphone she starts up with asking one simple question: - who of you have; a mother, a sister, an aunt or a friend diagnosed with breast cancer. Shockingly almost 80% of all attendees raised their hand.
Melanie’s own journey is filled with harsh news, doctors and nurses insensible way of interacting with her but also with wonderful medical people, supportive family and friends. She shares lessons learned with us and in spite of the seriousness of the subject, we have lots of laughter. It’s clear that know-how, persistence, mind setting and a warm and loving support system are key factors enabling the patient to fight this disease. Amazing how many fantastic people we have all around us.
Take Care and keep healthy!

"Bra Art"
October 11, 2011 marked the first ever American Forces’ Spouses’ Club Bra Art Competition, a unique fund-raiser in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over 20 AFSC “artists” created one-of-a-kind bras that were exhibited as works of art in order to support breast cancer awareness and to raise money for breast cancer research.

Do not know about the nightlife in Seoul, YET.....
However, the city, which I do not find very beautiful when driving or walking through it during the day, it's absolutely magnificent by night.
I mentionend before that I find Seoul a facinating city, offering something for everybody. But look at these pictures and enjoy, Seoul by Night.
